Presents, ready and waiting to be opened!!

What a week we've had! It was Jay's 6th birthday on Friday, he had school that day so he opened his presents before he went. He wanted the Lego City Harbour kit and a pencil tin that has little shelves with pencils inside.

We had his first ever party on Saturday and he chose to have a bouncy castle party at the Bitterne Leisure Centre with some of his school classmates and his 5 cousins. They bounced for 1 hour then had food in a separate room for 45 minutes afterwards.

The sports mascot 'Bubbles' (I think) was available to pose for photos at the end. Daisy seemed to like him in particular!

Jay had a cake at home on Friday that he wanted, and then had another one for all the party-goers on Saturday.

I think Jay really enjoyed the bouncing part, but the food bit afterwards was a bit much for him. He seemed a bit overwhelmed at the end, so he had some quiet time at home afterwards.

On a different note, I have made 2 new crochet designs - a bracelet, and a cup cozy with coaster.

I'm in the middle of writing the cup cozy pattern, with photos, which will be available in my Etsy Store later this week.

Daisy was poorly, starting Wednesday last week - she had a temperature and was exhausted all the time, I haven't seen her sleep so much in a long while! We took her to see the nurse on Friday morning (Jay's birthday) and she had her ears, chest and throat checked. It turned out that she had a really red throat, but by then her temperature was beginning to come back to normal, thank goodness.

Now it's Jay's turn, he missed school yesterday because he had a high temperature, then was sick all over the living room floor. That took some cleaning up! He's off today too. He seems a bit better today, but didn't eat much at all yesterday so I need to make sure his energy levels are getting back to normal. Today he's had some breakfast so that's good.

I had a cold too, and have got a sinus infection - ah well, here's for a bit of a more restful week this week, and hope we're more fit and healthy too!!

Crochet Headband & new Flickr Group

I wanted to make a little headband for Daisy for a while and then I found a really cute pattern on Etsy, from

BusyMomDesigns, with another of her patterns with a pretty rose to decorate it.

Daisy's hair is getting a little bit longer, but sometimes it can look a bit boyish, and it's probably a bit short for hair clips or bows yet. so here it is.

I think she looks really cute in it!

I Finished a Crochet Scarf for Daisy

This week I made a scarf for Daisy with 100% wool using a crochet granny stripe stitch, using a 4.00mm hook. It was like crocheting with Neapolitan ice-cream - strawberry, vanilla and chocolate - mmmmm!!

The yarn is Patons Fairytale Dreamtime DK Pure Wool (Baby Yarn 100% Wool). Shade: Baby Colour - 04182.

I'll be adding a link to the pattern on my Patterns and Tutorials tab (above) in the next couple of days.

Daisy's First Drawing

Daisy had hold of one a Jay's pens yesterday and was tapping it on the table, I decided to put some paper underneath, and take the lid off and see what happened - this is it . . .

She did get some on her face and hands too, but mostly on the paper and a bit on the table - thank goodness for washable pens!!

I think she's going to be left-handed, like Jay, as she seems to do a lot of things starting with the left, like standing up, holding the pens, eating. Time will tell - she'll be 11 months on Saturday - children can take quite a while to decide which hand is best for them, although it was obvious from an early age that Jay was left-handed.

We had a good time opening presents on Christmas morning, Jay wanted a train for his train set, and because Father Christmas thought he'd been a good boy, he received just what he wanted.

Sadly it didn't work properly, so it had to go back to the North Pole and Jay has chosen another train as a replacement. I really hope the next one works, as it's so disappointing to see your child upset at Christmas.

It was a real pleasure seeing how Daisy interacted with her presents, she was really interested in ripping the paper!

We went to visit my brother and his family in the late afternoon, and had a lovely time seeing my niece (age 6) and nephew (age 2). Another unfortunate thing was when I started wheezing and coughing, and realised that their guinea pig was giving me an allergic reaction (he is living in the living room during winter - and usually lives outside in the garden), so we had to leave after about half an hour, and it took me a couple of hours to get myself back to normal.

How to Increase and Decrease Knitting Stitches

Well, I've started the knitting journey - I now know how to cast-on, knit and purl to make stocking stitch, rib stitch, basket weave stitch and moss stitch. I'm enjoying learning the stitches, but the hand positioning feels really awkward compared to crocheting, it almost feels back-to-front.

I'm just wanting to learn to stitches and techniques at the moment, so I can have a go at a simple pattern. Next pattern in the book is a mobile phone case. I was looking at knitting a heart further on but I couldn't understand the instructions on how to increase, so had to look it up online. I found THIS video on YouTube showing how to increase and decrease, which helped a lot.

Jay goes back to school tomorrow, so the Christmas and New Year celebrations are officially over. We'll take down the Christmas trees on Friday for another year. I'll need an early night tonight as I've been staying up a bit too late lately and it will be hard to get up tomorrow morning!

Happy New Year to you all! I've decided that this year I'm going to learn to knit - I've just bought this book with some vouchers I received for Christmas: Usborne's 'How to Knit', by Fiona Watt & Stella Baggott.

I think it's a children's book, so this should make it easy to learn, with easy-to-follow photos and diagrams. I'm also hoping that Jay or Daisy might like to learn one day, so this book should help them too.

I'm also planning to write and sell my original crochet patterns on Etsy, Ravelry and on my Website (which will also need to be updated to show the changes).

I also plan to update this Blog regularly, so I hope you can come back again soon.

What are your plans for the coming year? Whatever they are, I hope that you all have a wonderful 2012 - the year of the London Olympics!

Review of 'Baby Garden Boots' Crochet Pattern from 'The Lovely Crow'

Review of 'Baby Garden Boots' Crochet Pattern from 'The Lovely Crow'

Yarn used: Hayfield 100% acrylic Chunky weight

Colours: Shade 0993 (Aran) for the boot, Shade 0936 (Light Natural) for the sole
Hook: 4.5 mm
Gauge: 4sc per inch
Size: 6-12 months - up to 5" in length

I first tried a gauge swatch using DK weight yarn, but I thought the texture was too loose. This version is a lot tighter and therefore makes a thicker boot for the Winter weather.

It's brilliant that Elizabeth has made some video tutorials to help along the way with her patterns. She has used a password to lock the videos, but after purchase you will be sent the password so you are able to access the tutorial videos.

Following the pattern . . .

Round 1 - 34 sts: I mis-counted - I need to concentrate!
Round 2 - 44 sts: I mis-counted again! I'm being pestered for some chocolate by Jay!
Round 3 - 50 sts: sole measuring up perfectly!

Round 4 - 50 sts: all fine.

Special Instruction - I followed the text and 3 images on where to place the hook and yarn, and then watched the accompanying video, which was really helpful as it explained perfectly, in detail, how to do this, then the next round.

Round 5 - Having a bit of trouble finding the gaps where I need to insert the needle as the yarn is so thick. I need to re-do as I'm short by 3 sts. Ah, I see, I'm on the wrong layer, I need to go up one layer, that's much easier to do! All stitches present and correct. 51 sts.

Change colour

Round 6 - 51 sts: all fine.
Round 7 - 51 sts: still going fine.

Having a break to go to bed, will continue tomorrow.

Round 8 - 39 sts - going well this morning - I needed that sleep! Young lady awake now after her nap, will come back to this again later.

Round 9 - 33 sts - perfect!
Round 10 - 30 sts - going fine.

Right Shoe:

Round 11 - Starting to make the flap and button hole - looking good so far. I'm thinking that this must have take a lot of working out to make this pattern work so well.
Round 12 - Going well.
Round 13 - Going well.

Round 14 - I nearly missed adding an extra stitch at the end of the round, but spotted it in time! All going well.
Round 15 - 2nd buttonhole made
Round 16 - Remembered extra st at end this time.
Round 17 - All good.
Round 18 - Still fine.
Round 19 - Good
Round 20 - Last round, last buttonhole.

I just need to add the 3 buttons, then it's all finished!!

It's been a great pattern to follow, and am extremely pleased with the results. I have decided to make a smaller pair for Daisy, as these ones are too big for her little feet right now. There's nothing wrong with the pattern - that measures up perfectly - I should have measured Daisy's feet before I started making this pair. I will complete the 2nd boot of this pair so she will be able to grow into them!

Happy Halloween from Groovy Pumpkin!! What are you up to for Halloween this year? We're going to get a pumpkin and cut a face in it, and use some glow sticks inside for some safe coloured lighting.

Scary Fairy Costume

Here's my very own little Scary Fairy who went to her very first Halloween Party this morning. I made the tutu out of tulle and ribbons, and made the fairy wings from felt and glitter glue for the back of the outfit. I bought the tights which the whole theme was based on.

I made some Scary Fairy cakes to take with us too, they had orange flavoured buttercream on the top, with sprinkles and green glitter on some, and spider decorations on others. It was nice to see them on the little kiddie's plates!

The party was very good, with lots of little skeletons, vampires, witches, pumpkins and devils - what a great collection of costumes the kiddies were all dressed in.

Unfortunately Daisy was sick over the front of her tutu just before judging for the best costume, so I'd taken it off. Needless to say, she didn't win - a pretty baby pumpkin won a book - I was disappointed! Never mind, there's always Halloween night where she can use her freshly washed costume to go and scare the neighbours - he he!

Oh yes, here's an update on the broccoli seeds, I think they've been getting a bit too dry, so the shoots have come out on some, but seem not to be developing beyond that, I've put in a lot more water this morning, so hopefully this will improve things.

Hello, I've been busy lately with life and seem to have neglected my Blog. Remember last year when I had a post virtually every day of October regarding Halloween? I do, I was really excited by bringing lots of pumpkin related posts, I hope you get to take a look - just click HERE or go to the label 'Everything Pumpkin'.

I've been busy with looking after Daisy, as she's getting a bit more mobile now, and this week Jay is on his half-term holiday from school. I made them both some crocheted hats to wear on the way to school in the cold mornings we've been having - an owlie for Daisy and a monster for Jay. What do you think?

We put some sprouting seeds - broccoli - onto some wet kitchen towel so that we can watch them grow and then eat them in a few days. Here they are just after we sowed them.

I'll put some more photos on here to show their progress, there's not much to report today, though some seeds have split open and you can see them starting to germinate (big word of the day, he he!).

Daisy has 2 teeth now, and here's the first photo we have showing them off nicely.

I have started another small crochet project - a row of crocheted bunting to decorate Daisy's corner of the bedroom. I've only done 3 so far, but you can see what they look like. I like this coloured yarn.

I found the pattern for the crochet triangle HERE, via Pinterest, I just adapted it slightly so that it worked better. I've got a huge collection on Pinterest now, such as 'Crafty Things', 'Clothing & Accessories', 'Make FOR the Kids' and 'Make WITH the Kids'.

And just to finish for now, here are my 2 cute babies again - I love them SO much!!!

Button Bouquets and Boutonnières

On Friday I discovered some beautiful wedding bouquets that were not made of flowers, but of buttons instead. I became really absorbed in this and discovered that buttonholes/boutonnières and corsages existed too, also made from buttons and florists wire.

I'd never heard of the word boutonnière before so was pleased to learn about them:

"A boutonnière is a floral decoration worn by men, typically a single flower or bud. The word comes from the French word for buttonhole, which is the British term." (Source.)

Daisy is 6 Months Old Today!

Six months ago, on St Valentine's Day, (and my birthday) I was in hospital having just given birth to the most beautiful little girl - we named her Daisy.

Today marks her 6-month birthday!

I took part in a raffle recently via Facebook, with 4 prizes being offered by Emily Peacock, the talented tapestry designer, who specialises in needlepoint and cross stitch, her designs being 'bold, graphic and modern'.

The raffle was to raise funds for 'Make for Macmillan - Cancer Support' and there were 250 tickets available. I chose two ticket numbers and No 246 won 4th prize, which was '1 kit of my choice'!

I'd seen these beautiful kits several times before and had always wanted this 'Kiss' kit, but due to financial constraints couldn't have one. Until NOW!!!!

Imagine my surprise, amazement and delight at being told I'd won this prize - I was just so excited!

Well, it arrived on Tuesday, but we were out so the postman couldn't deliver it - I was really disappointed. I had to wait at least 48 hours to collect it, which I finally did yesterday, and made a start on some of the cream background last night. I'm not sure how long it will take to make - probably quite a while - but I know I'll really enjoy doing it.

Have you heard of Pinterest? It's a great place where you can 'pin' items that you like on virtual 'boards'.

I joined about 6 weeks ago and I have become seriously addicted! I like to look at it every day to see what new items have been added by people I'm following, and whether I want to re-pin some of their things, as well as pictures from emails or other websites I like.

Pinterest is a place where you can add pictures of all the things you like to boards such as 'Clothing & Accessories', 'Crafty Things', 'Gorgeous Colours'. You can have lots of different boards so you can be really organised in your pinning.

Amy Butler 'Love' fabric - Dribble Bib 1

Here's a bib I made for my daughter, Daisy, she's nearly 5 months old now and she's dribbling for England! It's in the style of a 'neckerchief', which seems to be really popular here right now.

I wanted to make her a bib that's more attractive for her to wear - "if you have to wear a bib all the time it needs to be a nice one", I thought!

This is made from Amy Butler's ‎'LOVE': 'Tumble Roses / Tangerine' cotton fabric for the top and a soft fleece backing to protect against wetness going onto the clothing underneath. I saw the fabric the other day and thought this would be perfect as she wears a lot of orange / peach coloured things.

I've also got some Cath Kidston mini strawberries fabric with a blue background which will go nicely with some of her red, white and blue clothes. I have some other scraps too so might make her a few more from these as they'll get used a lot.

Here's the first gorgeous Sock Monkey that I made for my son - he chose the socks - turquoise circles on a white background.

I've recently come across this great collage artist: Claudine Hellmuth. Have you heard of her? She creates some really interesting collages and sells them in her Etsy Store.

She's getting ready to start an online course which is just $30 and will cover 4 weeks of instruction ($1 a day!) - starting 2nd June 2011. I might be interested, but don't think I'll have the time at the moment, but thought I'd share with anyone who does.

We've just bought a little video camera and have been out using it today.

We went to Southampton Central Station and filmed LOTS of trains as Jay LOVES them.

OK, So I Bought Another Crochet Book Today!

Yes, that's right, I couldn't help myself!!

I was given some Hobbycraft vouchers for my birthday, and today was the first time I was able to get there.

I love books, as you may know, so that was the first section I went to and found this: 'Natural Crochet for Babies and Toddlers' by Tina Barrett.

I like most of the patterns in there, such as 'Cotton Cot Mobile', 'Ribbon Shrug' (pictured on the front cover), 'Heart Blanket', and many more!

I just need a little more time to myself to get on with making these lovely items, and am sure this will happen a bit more as time goes by.

New Books: 'Cute and Easy Crochet', and 'Wonders of the Universe'

Hi all, I've been a little lacking in my blogging recently, but I'm hoping to get back into it again when I sometimes get a little time to myself! Daisy is sleeping at the moment so this is gooooooood!

I bought a book on Saturday: 'Cute & Easy Crochet' by Nicki Trench, and am looking forward to having a go at some of these gorgeous crochet projects, in three difficulty levels: Beginner, Improver, and Enthusiast.

Some projects I'll have a go at are: 'Mug Warmers' (Beginner), the Improver level 'Baby Bibs', and I think I'll even be able to attempt some of the Enthusiast projects too, like the 'Mrs Mittens Purse'.

I also bought another book yesterday (at half price) called 'Wonders of the Universe' by Professor Brian Cox who has recently begun another excellent TV series - 'Wonders of the Universe' - on BBC2 at 9:00pm on Sunday evenings - it's great! Visit his Official Website for more information HERE.

Well, some of you may know that I had my new baby girl on 14th February - my birthday and St Valentine's Day by c-section!

I have 5 minutes to myself so thought I'd just add a few photos in case you didn't get to see them on Facebook recently.

We've called our daughter Daisy, and she's beautiful!

She's now 3 weeks and 2 days old and is coming along really well. I'm looking forward to seeing her become the little person she is destined to be, and will be there for her all the way!

Catching Up and New Things I've Made

I'd just like to share a few things that I've made over the past few weeks while I've been growing this baby - yes, she's still in there at this moment in time - though only 4 days to go!!

They're all crocheted items, the first being a cup cozy - my own pattern I might add - created with Sirdar Crofter DK, Fair Isle Effect DK, Shade 0045, 60% Acrylic, 25% Cotton, 15% Wool:

The next being 'Peony Corsage' - a pattern from 'Inside Crochet' magazine, Issue 14, by Shirley MacDonald, from http://woolly-knit-bits.blogspot.com/. I liked making these, so have made 3 so far - each one quite different:

It's definitely smaller than it should be, so may have another go. Or, I may try to make one in a much bigger size to make it into a tote bag, as I really like the mesh detailing on the sides, and the curly tassels too!

Crocheted Nappy/Diaper Cover

On Friday I bought a wonderful 'PDF PATTERN for Crochet Baby Diaper Cover' from Tafferty Designs on Etsy, and have just completed my own nappy cover.

I used Rowan's Colourscape Chunky in 'Cherry', which is 100% lambswool, after looking around my local John Lewis yarn section and speaking with one of the assistants.

The pattern did call for a cotton yarn, but I wanted to try out the pattern in a multi-coloured yarn and they only had wool so thought I'd give it a go anyway.

I also bought a hank of the same wool, but in 'Moody Blues' shade to use either for this or something else, I'm not sure yet.

"Colourscape is a roving type yarn with an artisan look and rustic appeal which is spun and made in Britain. Designed by renowned textile artist, Kaffe Fassett each hank gives a single repeat rainbow like effect."

I am really pleased with the result - the pattern was so easy to follow and the cover almost made itself - the yarn was lovely to use and I'm looking forward to making another one in the next couple of days!

I hope your weekend is going well so far! I started making this Crocheted Water Bottle Bag last night and have been doing more today - it's a really easy pattern to follow. I might try THIS one next - a cute 'Smiling Sunflower Bag'.

I'm using Patons Smoothie DK 100% Acrylic yarn, Colour 2102 (Blue Mix), (used previously HERE) with a 3.5mm hook, I'm not sure if it's going to be big enough though, so if I do it again I may use a slightly larger hook and thicker yarn.

I've nearly finished the actual bag section and will be starting the handles soon. If you want a good beginner project then THIS really is the one for you!

I've just placed an order for this GORGEOUS Changing Bag from PacaPod! I'm so excited as I saw it in Mothercare in black a couple of months ago and really wanted to get one there and then, but they're expensive, so I held off.

I hadn't forgotten about it though, and so today I looked on the PacaPod website and found that they do this lovely pink design version (Tutti Fruiti), which is MUCH better than the black one, and just had to have it!

C-Section Planned - New Due Date

We had a meeting with a Consultant Midwife at the hospital yesterday afternoon to discuss the options of giving birth this time around - Elective Caesarean vs VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Caesarean).

We've decided to go with an elective c-section due to complications with Jay's birth previously, and the proposed date is Friday 11th February 2011 - only 2 days before our due date!

Although, if I go into labour before this date then I'll give the natural birth a go (eeek), and if they don't think I'm progressing as well as I should (1 cm dilation per hour) then another emergency c-section will be done as they won't let the labour go on as long as it did last time (5 days!) due to the possibility of the old scar rupturing.

I've been quite stressed about it as there were some complications with Jay's birth and this has made me really nervous about trying again. I wasn't quite prepared when I found out I was pregnant, even though it's been nearly 5 years since last time.

Underwater Themed Mobile - Starfish

I'm currently working on a children's mobile with an underwater theme, featuring a turtle, an octopus, a crab, a Clown Fish, a Moorish Idol fish, 2 shells, a seahorse and this starfish - pictured below.

Each marine character will be made from felt, and embellished with a selection of beads, sequins and/or glitter glue. The felt is a really soft wool mix and is a real pleasure to work with, bought from Lupin at Dawanda.

Watch this space as each piece is created, and then fixed together to complete the mobile.

Historical Southampton - Mayflower Voyage to America

I was curious about Thanksgiving Day in the US, and so did a little research into where and when the Pilgrim Fathers left England for America. As it happens, I live in Southampton, where the Mayflower set sail in 1620 - 390 years ago - and I didn't know the history surrounding all the places in Southampton named after the Mayflower, such as Mayflower Park, The Mayflower Theatre, Mayflower Cruise Terminal, etc.

Mayflower II

Southampton was where the Mayflower was prepared for it's iconic journey to America. It was chartered by the group of English Separatists, who, with the backing of a consortium of London Merchants chartered the Speedwell and Mayflower for the journey to the New World. The Mayflower along with the Speedwell left Southampton on 5 August 1620 with around 120 passengers. The Speedwell sprung several dangerous leaks forcing them into Dartmouth and Plymouth.

While at Plymouth the pilgrims stayed at the Island House on the Barbican, where today there is a plaque listing the names of all the passengers. It was while they were in Plymouth that they decided to leave the Speedwell behind making the journey aboard the Mayflower only. Several of the original pilgrims decided the problems already encountered didn't bode well for the journey and left the ship at Plymouth to return home. In all around 100 pilgrims finally continued the journey to American on 6 September 1620.

Route across the Atlantic Ocean

They finally reached America in November 1620 but didn't land until December naming their landing port New Plymouth. Their journey and the subsequent settlement in America were recorded by William Bradford, who estimated that fifty percent of the Pilgrims had died by February 1621! It wasn't until a Native American, Squanto, showed them how to farm the land that they managed to provide for themselves and survive. Later their numbers swelled when more English Separatists joined them. Their story is now ingrained in American History and consciousness.

Here is a memorial in Southampton, UK to the Pilgrim Fathers that was erected on the 350th anniversary of their journey, and is built of Portland stone.

3rd Trimester, Here we Come!

26 weeks pregnant

Well, we've entered our 3rd Trimester today, where our baby girl measures around 36cm (15in) long, head to toe, and weighs around 760g (1lb 7oz).

Over the next 3 weeks she’ll go through a major growth spurt - I've already thought this was the case as I've been really hungry for the last few days! Also, her eyes will be opening around now too.

I have to say, the picture above doesn't show the real size of my belly - let's just say it's a bit bigger than the picture! I've been getting a lot of back ache when I've been standing or walking for a while, and have to take regular sit downs but soon feel better, so that's good news.

Also, yesterday was the first day my right ankle swelled up as the day went on. It had gone down a bit in the night but was still a little puffy this morning, so we went out for a walk in Southampton to get some exercise to try and get my blood moving around a bit more - this helped too I think, so all is well right now.

2 (14-ounce) packages gingerbread mix

1 (5.1-ounce) box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping
1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional

Directions:

Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions; cool completely.
Meanwhile, prepare the pudding and set aside to cool.
Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar, and cardamom into the pudding.
Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl.
Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping.
Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding, and whipped topping.
Sprinkle of the top with crushed gingersnaps, if desired.
Refrigerate overnight.
Trifle can be layered in a punch bowl.

As you may know, I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp, especially as Captain Jack Sparrow! So, I've now found the ultimate Jack-o-lantern subject for me - I think you'll agree!

'Everything Pumpkin' - DAY 18: Amish Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls with Caramel Icing

Amish Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

ROLLS:
1/3 cup milk
2 tbs butter
½ cup canned pumpkin or mashed cooked pumpkin
2 tbs granulated sugar
½ tsp salt
1 large egg, beaten
1 package active dry yeast
1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 cup bread flour

FILLING:
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 Tbs melted butter

FROSTING:
¼ cup (4 tbsp) butter
½ cup brown sugar, packed
2 tbs milk
¼ tsp vanilla extract
dash of salt
½ to ¾ cup sifted powdered sugar

1. Prepare rolls: In a small saucepan, heat milk and 2 tbsp. butter just until warm (120° – 130°) and butter is almost melted, stirring constantly.

2. In large mixer bowl, combine pumpkin, sugar and salt. Add milk mixture and beat with an electric mixer until well mixed. Beat in egg and yeast. In a separate mixing bowl, combine flours. Add half of flour mixture to pumpkin mixture. Beat mixture on low speed for 5 minutes, scraping sides of bowl frequently. Add remaining flour and mix thoroughly (dough will be very soft). Turn into lightly greased bowl, then grease surface of dough lightly. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

3. Punch dough down. Turn onto floured surface. Knead a few turns to form a smooth dough, sprinkling with enough additional flour to make dough easy to handle. On lightly floured surface, roll dough into 12 ×10-inch rectangle.

4. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon. Brush surface of dough with melted butter. Sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Beginning with long side of dough, roll up jelly-roll style. Pinch seam to seal. With a sharp serrated knife, gently cut roll into twelve 1-inch slices. Place rolls cut-side-up in greased 9-inch-square baking pan.

5. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, 30 to 45 minutes.

6. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake rolls for about 20 minutes, or until golden. Remove from pan to waxed paper-lined wire rack. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes.

7. While rolls are cooling, prepare icing: In small saucepan, heat butter until melted. Stir in brown sugar and milk. Stir in brown sugar and milk. Cool over medium-low heat for 1 minute. Transfer to a small mixing bowl and cool mixture slightly. Stir in vanilla, salt and powdered sugar. Beat with an electric mixer until well blended. If necessary, add more powdered sugar for desired consistency.

8. Drizzle icing over warm rolls.

Yield: 12 rolls

Cooking Tips:

* If you’d like to begin preparing these the night before… Follow directions through step four, cover and refrigerate overnight. Take out in the morning and continue with step 5.

** If you’re lacking a warm place for rising, use your oven. Turn on the oven light. Then set your oven to 400 degrees for one minute. Turn it OFF and then place your pan inside the warmed oven. Make sure you have turned off your oven!

'Everything Pumpkin' - DAY 17: Eye See You

Thanks to my lovely Facebook buddy - Tiffany Kelly (from T~Cakes Diaper Cakes) - who told me about this fun crafty project to try with your kiddies.

She made some of these, including a cool 'Mini Halloween Jack-o-Lantern and Spooky Eyeball' and has uploaded them to YouTube HERE.

Lined up in your front window, these petrifying peepers, made from Ping-Pong balls and battery-powered tea lights, will give passers by the chilling feeling that they're being watched.

Total Time Needed:
1 Hour

Materials:
Ping-Pong ball
Permanent markers
Battery-powered tea light
Paper
Scissors
Glue dots

Instructions:

1) Cut an X in the Ping-Pong ball (an adult's job).

2) Draw eye details on the ball with permanent markers.

3) Cut embellishments from paper and attach them to the ball with glue dots.

'Everything Pumpkin' - DAY 14: Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

Pumpkin Cupcakes

If you’re looking for an Autumnal dessert that includes all of the best flavours of the season – pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger – and that just so happens to have a healthy dollop of cream cheese frosting on top, then these cupcakes are definitely for you. Warm, spiced, sweet and utterly addictive!

Pumpkin Cupcakes

Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

Yield: 32 cupcakes

Equipment:
Standard 12-cup muffin tin
Paper muffin cup liners
Stand mixer or hand mixer
Offset spatula or pastry bag with decorating tips

For the Cupcakes:
4 cups plain flour (not self-raising), sifted
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2½ cups packed light-brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1½ cups canned pumpkin (not pie filling)

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
12 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 pound (4 cups) confectioners’ sugar, sifted
¾ teaspoon vanilla extract

To Make the Cupcakes:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices.

2. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and brown sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of buttermilk, and beating until just combined. Add pumpkin; beat until just combined.

3. Divide batter evenly among lined cups, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until golden brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer tins to wire racks to cool 10 minutes; turn out cupcakes onto racks and let cool completely. Cupcakes can be refrigerated up to 3 days in airtight containers.

4. To finish, use an offset spatula or a pastry bag fitted with a decorated tip to top the cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

To Make the Frosting:
With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and cream cheese until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low. Add sugar, ½ cup at a time, and then vanilla, and mix until smooth and combined, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.

If not using immediately, frosting can be refrigerated up to 3 days in an airtight container; before using, bring to room temperature, and beat on low speed until smooth again.

'Everything Pumpkin' - DAY 10: How to Make a Pumpkin Suncatcher

This shows how to make a simple suncatcher that looks like a pumpkin. This is a great craft for even the youngest child in the family.

Age Guideline: All Ages

Time Required: Approx 15 minutes

The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances. For best results, read through all of these steps before you start making this craft.

Let's begin...

Before you start any project it is easiest to gather together all of the supplies. For this project you will need:

Clear Con-Tact Paper
Black Felt
Variety of Orange Arts and Crafts Objects
Pen
Scissors

Now you need a pumpkin shape . . .

Of course, you can draw your own pumpkin, but you can also use a pumpkin picture as a template. The easiest way to make a pumpkin pattern is to use a colouring book page. Here are two you can choose from:

If you are using a printed pumpkin pattern, you will need to cut it out. If you are going to draw your own pumpkin, skip this step.

Lay your pumpkin pattern on the paper side of the clear Con-Tact paper. Trace around it using a pen. If you are not using a pattern you can draw your pumpkin directly onto the paper side of the Con-Tact paper.

Now you need to cut out your Con-Tact paper pumpkin.

Carefully peel the paper backing off of your Con-Tact paper pumpkin. Use a couple of small pieces of masking tape to hold your pumpkin, sticky side up, on your work surface.

Start out by making the pumpkin's facial features using black felt. Stick these onto the Cont-Tact paper. Use a couple of green craft items to color the stem (this is optional as you can also use orange for this too).

Now comes the funnest part. Make your pumpkin orange by sticking a variety of orange craft supplies to the Con-Tact paper. I used everything from scraps of tissue paper to glitter.

Carefully remove the masking tape from the front of your pumpkin. At this time, you can also trim the extra off of any embellishment that hangs over the edge of the Con-Tact paper.

Now you can hang your pumpkin in a window or other location using cellophane tape.

'Everything Pumpkin' - DAY 9: Spiked Pumpkin Soup

This silky, slightly sweet soup is a fitting starter for various holiday entrées, including roast turkey, ham, or pork tenderloin. Bourbon enhances the natural sweetness of the pumpkin.

Yield: 9 servings (serving size: about 1 cup soup, 1 tablespoon sour cream, and 1 teaspoon parsley).

Ingredients
Cooking spray
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon minced peeled fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 cups apple cider
1/3 cup bourbon
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 (29-ounce) can pumpkin
1 (14-ounce) can fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk
1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
9 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Preparation

Heat a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add onion, ginger, cumin, and garlic cloves; sauté 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Stir in cider, bourbon, syrup, pumpkin, and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes.

Place half of pumpkin mixture in a blender; process until smooth. Pour pureed mixture into a large bowl. Repeat process with remaining pumpkin mixture. Return pureed mixture to pan. Stir in milk, flour, salt, and pepper; cook until thoroughly heated (do not boil), stirring frequently.

Serve with sour cream. Garnish with parsley, if desired.
